At The Restaurant. Pt1

Today we will learn some restaurant basics.

ウェイトレス: いらっしゃいませ。何名さまですか。
山田さん: 二人です。
ウェイトレス: どうぞこちらへ。

Ueitoresu: Irasshaimase. Nanmei sama desu ka.
Yamada-san: Futari desu.
Ueitoresu: Douzo kochira e.

Waitress: Welcome! How many people?
Yamada: Two people.
Waitress: This way, please.

山田さん: メニューお願いします。
ウェイトレス: はい、少々お待ちください。

Yamada-san: Menyuu onegaishimasu.
Ueitoresu: Hai, shou shou omachi kudasai.

Yamada: Can I have a menu, please?
Waitress: Yes, please wait a moment.

Ueitoresu - ウェイトレス - waitress

Irasshaimase. - いらっしゃいませ。- Welcome (to our shop) (Used as a greeting to welcome customers.)

nanmei sama - 何名さま - how many people (It is very polite way of saying "how many people". "Nannin" is less formal.)

futari - 二人 - two people

kochira - こちら - this way

Menyuu - メニュー - menu

Onegaishimasu. - お願いします。 - Please do me a favour. (Convenient phrase used when making a request.)

Shou shou omachi kudasai. - 少々お待ちください。 - Please wait a moment. (formal expression)

山田さん: 僕はすしの盛り合わせ。
弘子さん: 私はてんぷらにします。
ウェイトレス: すしの盛り合わせがひとつ、てんぷらがひとつですね。お飲み物はいかがですか。
山田さん: ビールを一本ください。
弘子さん: 私もビールをもらいます。
ウェイトレス: かしこまりました。他に何か。
山田さん: いいえ、結構です。

Ueitoresu: Go-chuumon wa okimari desu ka.
Yamada-san: Boku wa sushi no moriawase.
Hiroko-san: Watashi wa tempura ni shimasu.
Ueitoresu: Sushi no moriawase ga hitotsu, tempura ga hitotsu desu ne. O-nomimono wa ikaga desu ka.
Yamada-san: Biiru o ippon kudasai.
Hiroko-san: Watashi mo biiru o moraimasu.
Ueitoresu: Kashikomarimashita. Hoka ni nani ka.
Yamada-san: Iie, kekkou desu.

Waitress: Would you like to order?
Yamada: I will have assorted sushi.
Hiroko: I will have a tempura.
Waitress: One assorted sushi and one tempura, isn't it? Would you like anything to drink?
Yamada: A bottle of beer, please.
Hiroko: I will have beer, too.
Waitress: Certainly. Anything else?
Yamada: No thanks.

go-chuumon - ご注文 - order

boku - 僕 - I (informal, it is used by men only)

sushi no moriawase - すしの盛り合わせ - assorted sushi

hitotsu - ひとつ - one (Native Japanese number)

o-nomimono - お飲み物 - beverage

Ikaga desu ka. - いかがですか。 - Would you like ~?

Biiru - ビール - beer

Morau - もらう - to receive

Kashikomarimashita. - かしこまりました。 - Certainly. (Literally means, "I understand.")

Nanika - 何か - anything

Iie, kekkou desu. - いいえ、結構です。 - No, thank you.

Basic Directions - Sound File.

How much? - Ikura desu ka.

When you go shopping in Japan the following easy phrase will come in very handy. The phrase is:
Ikura desu ka. - いくらですか。How much?



そのカメラはいくらですか。　－　Sono kamera wa ikura desu ka. 　－　How much is that camera?
十二万五千円です。　－　じゅうにまんごせんえんです。　－　Juunimangosen en desu.　－　It is 25,000 Yen.

あれはいくらですか。　－　Are wa ikura desu ka.　－　How much is that?

これはいくらですか。　－　Kore wa ikura desu ka.　－　How much is this?

これ = Kore is next to the speaker (This one next to me.)

その = Sono is next to the listener (That one next to you.)

あれ = Are is away from both speaker and listener (That one other there.)

あれは傘いくらですか。　－　あれはかさいくらですか。　－　Are wa kasa ikura desu ka.　－　How much is the umbrella (Over there)?

おのはテレビいくらですか。　－　Sono wa terebi ikura desu ka.　－　How much is the telly (next to you)?

これはラジオいくらですか。　－　Kore wa rajio ikura desu ka.　－　How much is this radio (next to me, here)？

Kanji break down:

十 = Ten, 10 = ON Reading: Juu, Jitsu, Jutsu / KUN Reading: Too, To.

二 = Two, 2 = ON Reading: Ni, Ji / KUN Reading: Futa, Futatsu, Futatabi.

万 = Ten Thousand, 10,000 = ON Reading: Man, Ban / KUN Reading: Yorozu.

五 = Five, 5 = ON Reading: Go / KUN Reading: Itsu, Itsutsu.　

千 = Thousand, 1000 = ON Reading: Sen / KUN Reading: Chi.

円 = Yen, Round, Circle = ON Reading: En / KUN Reading: Marui, Maru, Mado, Madoka, Maroyaka.

傘 = Umbrella = ON Reading: San / KUN Reading: Kasa.

Chotto omachi kudasai. ちょっとお待ちください。 One moment, please.
~ wa ima imasen. ～はいません。 ~ is not here right now.
Mata atode denwa shimasu. また後で電話します。 I will call you later again.
Machigaemashita. 間違えました。 I got the wrong number.
Hanashi-chu desu. 話中です。 The line is busy / Engaged.
Denwa bangou wa nan ban desu ka. 電話番号は何番ですか。 What is your phone number?

On The Phone (special requested lesson, with added sound file)

もしのし。関口さんのおたくですか。= Moshi-moshi. Sekiguchi-san no otaku desu ka. = Hello, is that the Sekiguchi residence?

はい，関口ですが。 = Hai. Sekiguchi desu ga. = This is Mr Sekiguchi.　
　
どちらさまですか。 = Dochirasama desu ka. = Who's calling please?

田中さん　おねがいします。= Tanaka-san onegaishimasu. = May I speak to Mr Tanaka please?

しょうしょうおまちください。= Shoushou omachi kudasai. = Just a moment, please.

田中さんおでんわですよ。 = Tanaka-san odenwa desu yo. = Mr Tanaka, there's a phone call for you.

ちょっとでてください。= Chotto dete kudasai. = Will you answer the phone, please.

十時にもういちどおでんわください。= Juuji ni mou ichido odenwa kudasai. = Please phone me again at 10.

あとでまたおでんわします。= Ato de mata odenwa shimasu. = I'll call back later.

ごめんください。= Gomen kudasai. = Goodbye.

ちがいます。= Chigaimasu. = You have the wrong number.

Moshi moshi is the conventional beginning of a telephone conversation. It may also be repeated during the phone call to confirm whether the person you are talking to is still on the line. Even though it is translated as 'Hello' it is more like saying "I say!"

A Short Dialog

関口さん: もしもし、山田さんのおたくですか。
山田さん: はい、そうです。
関口さん: 関口で すが、ごしゅじんはいらっしゃいますか。
山田さん: いまいません。九時ごろかえります。
関口さん: そうで すか。でわまたあとででんわをします。
山田さん: はい、おねがいします。
関口さん: しつれいします。
山田さん: さよう なら。
Sekiguchi-san: Moshi moshi. Yamada-san no o-taku desu ka.
Yamada-san: Hai, sou desu.
Sekiguchi-san: Sekiguchi desu ga, go-shujin wa irasshaimasu ka.
Yamada-san: Ima imasen. Kuji goro kaerimasu.
Sekiguchi-san: Sou desu ka. Dewa mata ato de denwa o shimasu.
Yamada-san: Hai, onegaishimasu.
Sekiguchi-san: Shitsurei shimasu.
Yamada-san: Sayounara.

Mr. Sekiguchi: Hello. Is that Mr. Yamada's residence?
Mrs Yamada: Yes, it is.
Mr. Sekiguchi: This is Sekiguchi. Is your husband there?
Mrs Yamada: He's not here now. He'll be back about 9:00.
Mr. Sekiguchi: I see. Then I'll call again later.
Mrs Yamada: Yes. Please do.
Mr. Sekiguchi: Goodbye.
Mrs Yamada: Goodbye.

Onegaishimasu is a very convenient phrase, used when making a request. It literally means "I beg you," The reply to onegaishimasu is often Hai, wakarimashita. "I see. / Certainly."

電 話をします。= Denwa o shimasu. = Make a Phone call.

おたく。= O-taku = means "your house" or as in the above "Mr. Yamada's residence" It is very polite. Taku, alone is rarely used. Uchi （うち / 家） 'house' is more common. Example: Are wa dare no uchi desu ka. (あれはだれのうちですか) "Whose house is that?"

わたしは田中さんに電話をします。= Watashi wa Tanaka-san ni denwa o shimasu. = I will telephone Mr. Tanaka.

わたしは田中さんに電話をしました。= Watashi wa Tanaka-san ni denwa o shimashita. = I called (telephoned) Mr. Tanaka.

Suru means to do something. and it's '-masu' form is 'Shimasu' and is present and future positive. The negative is 'shimasen' (Watashi wa Tanaka-san ni denwa o shimasen) "I will not call Mr. Tanaka"
The past positive is 'shimashita' while the past negative form is 'shimasendeshita' (Watashi wa Tanaka-san ni denwa o shimasendeshita) "I did not call Mr. Tanaka"

Of course you may have to ask someone for their phone number.

A Short Dialog

田 中さん: あなたのでんわばんごうはなんばんですか。
関口さん: わたしのでんわばんごうはゼロ三の三四ゼロゼロの九ゼロ三一です。
Tanaka-san: Anata no denwa bangou wa nan-ban desu ka.
Sekiguchi-san: Watashi no denwa bangou wa zero-san no san-yon-zero-zero no kyuu-zero-san-ichi desu.

Mr. Tanaka: What is your phone number?
Mr.Sekiguchi: My phone number is (03) 3400-9031

電話 = でんわ　= Denwa. = Telephone.

電話番号 = でんわばんごう = Denwa bangou. = Phone number.

何番 = なんばん = Nanban. = What Number.

ゼロ = Zero. In telephone numbers 0 is often pronounced as zero. (03) is quite simply the code for Tokyo　東京 - とうきょう
